Program Note
I wrote this sonnet after the November 2024 election and set it as a song before the January 2025 inauguration. In our present surreal reality, many, particularly minorities and abuse survivors, are justifiably in fear and mourning. I offer it as well to anyone who for any reason may be in need of consolation.
May this song be a comfort.
May you be wrapped in comfort sure and sweet
Of lasting love and gentle, knowing friends,
Until this present aching sorrow mends,
May Hope, that faithful dog, curl at your feet.
Let forest paths lead you where beauty grows,
And Redwoods whisper wisdom. Hush and hear:
“This, too, shall pass, don’t spill your strength in fear,
But ponder how the timely river flows.”
Let’s breathe the fragrance of our guardian trees,
Share a cup from crystal springs for balm,
Pray with the Meadowlark’s melodious Psalm,
And wonder, clear-eyed, what the day will be
When peace and purpose will revive the soul,
And marvels yet unknown become our goal.
Ave Maria
